Knowing The Will Of God (4 Week Prayer Guide)

When making a decision, do you ever find yourself wondering if you’re making the decision God wants you to make? If you’re making the right choice?

Life is a culmination of choices. We are constantly making decisions in and for our lives. We usually don’t give much thought to the small decisions, like what to eat for dinner or our weekend plans. However, when it comes to bigger, seemingly move consequential decisions, like changing professions or whether or not to pursue fertility treatments, it can be hard to know if we’re making the right choice or not. After all, there’s no way of knowing what our future holds (or what we may be missing out on) if we choose “Option A” instead of “Option B” or vice versa.

However, we do serve an all-knowing God, who knows exactly what lies ahead in each of our futures. The Lord knows the domino effect that every choice we make will have on our lives. While we are busy deciphering what may be coming next or contemplating what we should do in any given situation, He is already an infinite amount of steps ahead of us, seeing the beginning from the end.

When we make decisions based on our own knowledge or feelings, the wisdom of this world, or others’ opinions, we are placing ourselves at a disadvantage and likely will experience unnecessary difficulties. On the other hand, when we make decisions based on God’s will for our lives, we never have to worry about what we may be missing out on or about making the wrong choice because we are entrusting our future and lives to a loving God who wants the absolute best for us.

How Can I Know If Something Is A Part Of God’s Will For My Life?

Knowing the will of God is not some complicated puzzle we need to solve. It’s simply something we must desire and then seek after. We are promised throughout Scripture that if we seek God, we will find Him and that God will not withhold wisdom from us:

And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways” (James 1:5-8).

The Lord does not want to withhold His will from us. Rather, He desires to reveal it to us.

God has chosen to reveal who He is and what His will is through the Bible. The more time we spend reading the Word of God, learning and obeying His commandments, clinging to His promises, and reading of His faithfulness, the more we will come to know God and the easier it will be for us to know the will of God.

If we don’t prioritize spending time with the Lord in His word, our discernment and knowledge of who God is and what His will is will become clouded over time. The longer we spend out of the Word of God, the more difficult it will become to recognize and distinguish the teachings and thoughts that are from God from those that are not. That is why in Romans 12:2, we are told not to think how the world thinks or to focus on the things of this world but to be constantly realigning our minds and thoughts with the word and knowledge of God so that we can always be within the will of God.

Some Truths/ Reminders About God’s Will

  1. To know God’s will, you must first surrender to His will. You have to truly want what He wants for your life, above what you want. Trusting that He knows what is best for you.
  2. God will never tell you to do something that goes against His word. If it goes against God’s word, it’s not from God.
  3. God’s will for each of our lives is unique and personal. Even if someone was in the same situation as you are in now, what they decided to do may not be what the Lord wants you to do. Always seek what His plan is for YOUR life.

What If I’m Facing An Issue Not Found In Scripture?

Although not every question you’ll ever have is directly printed in the Scriptures, the Lord has provided us with everything we need to make God-honoring decisions in every facet of our lives. For example, if you are contemplating whether or not to move your family to a different state, you’re not going to find a specific verse that speaks directly to your situation (thou shall not move). However, the Lord can still speak an intimate and direct word to you through any verse He chooses, and He has directly told us what to do in every situation:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

How do we acknowledge God? By petitioning Him in prayer. By asking Him what we should do. By fervently praying for the Lord’s will to be done in our lives, even if that means our will must be undone. One way of doing this is by praying specific Scriptures over ourselves.

What Does It Mean To Pray The Scriptures?

Praying the Scriptures means that we use Scriptures to form and direct our prayers. There are a few different ways of doing this, which can include praying the prayers of the Bible word for word, praying for the things God tells us we should be praying for, praying through various topics of the Bible, or personalizing portions of Scripture to pray over ourselves, other believers or a particular situation.

Why Is It Important To Pray The Scriptures?

Many of us desire to pray more but have difficulty finding the words when we try to pray. For new believers, prayer may be something completely foreign to them, and they can have a hard time knowing where or how to start. And, a lot of us tend to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves when it comes to prayer.

Prayer is not a time to impress God with our spiritual understanding of things, sugar coat our feelings or struggles, or push our agenda and desires unto Him. He doesn’t expect us to deliver a perfect speech or to say all of the right words.

It’s not meant to be intimidating or complicated, but inviting and beautiful.

Prayer is when we sit aside uninterrupted time to meet with God one on one. Like any conversation, there will be times when you’re talking and times when you will be listening. Unlike other conversations, when you’re listening for the Lord, you rest in the presence and peace of God, waiting for Him to speak a sweet and intimate (and oh so powerful!) word into your heart. The great thing about serving an all-knowing God is that He knows everything about us already. He knows our needs and wants. He has seen everything we have ever done, heard every word that we’ve said, and knows every thought that we’ve had.

Prayer is not a time where God gets to know us better, but rather how we come to know God on a more intimate level.

It’s how we grow our relationship with Him and become more like Him.

For it is during prayer that our heart, mind, and soul are renewed and realigned with the will of God.

Praying the Scriptures will help us become more comfortable with prayer and more confident in our ability to pray. It will also increase our prayer language vocabularies and make us more aware of God’s will for our lives. There is power and a confidence we can have when praying the Scriptures because when we do, we are praying the words of God, which guarantees that we are praying for our Father’s will to be done. In 1 John, we are told that “if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him” (1 John 5:14-15).

As we incorporate the words of God into our prayers more and more, we will also experience the transforming power the words of God can have over our very being. In the book of 2 Timothy, we are told that “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). By praying the Scriptures, we are cementing the words of God within our hearts and minds. As our prayers become more saturated with Scripture, our hearts will slowly be molded to be more like the heart of our Savior. Our perspectives will switch from the temporal to the eternal as we fix our eyes on God and pray for His purposes to be done here on earth.

The Four Week Prayer Guide: Knowing The Will Of God

At the beginning of the book of Colossians, Paul shares a prayer that he continually would pray over the people in the church in Colosse:

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

This is a powerful prayer, and one we need to be praying over ourselves often. To be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding is something we all need and what the Lord wants for us. Take a moment to really absorb those words and what they mean…

Over the next four weeks, I want to challenge you to pray this verse over yourself every day. Imagine what a wonderful/beautiful/peaceful/life-changing effect deciding to pray this prayer daily over yourself will have on everything you do!

Now, even though all of us will start with the best intentions of doing this, life can get busy, and it’s easy to forget. So, to keep us accountable and successful in achieving our goal, I’ve created a prayer guide and a plan to help keep us on track:

Step 1: DOWNLOAD THE 4 WEEK PRAYER GUIDE: 20+ pages that include a beautifully designed art printable of Colossians 1:9-12 that you can easily print out and hang somewhere in your home. Try to place it somewhere you will see it every day, like your bathroom mirror or bedside table. It will be a visual reminder of the challenge:

The Knowing The Will Of God Prayer Guide also includes weekly worksheets that will help you think deeper and gain more insight into Colossians 1:9-12 by:

  • Highlighting and focusing on each verse of the prayer individually and diving deeper into the meaning behind the words through mini Bible studies, prompts, and questions.
  • Helping you understand terms you may not be familiar with.
  • Understanding the context of the verses.
  • Guiding you in searching your own heart about the issues you’re praying about.
  • Giving you space to actually write down the passage in its entirety once every week. The act of writing it down will help your mind to store the prayer in your long term memory vs. your short term memory.
  • Keeping you on track with a prayer schedule checklist.

The worksheets that you’ll find for each week of the challenge can be completed in one sitting, or you can complete one every day. The choice is yours. 🙂

Step 2: SAVE THIS SCRIPTURE WALLPAPER ON YOUR CELLPHONE: Now, every time you look at your phone, you will be reminded of the prayer challenge and encouraged by the words of God.

Step 3: PRAY THE VERSE: every day for the next four weeks, pray the words of Colossians 1:9-12 over yourself. Your prayer might sound something like this, “Lord, I ask that You would fill me with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that I would walk worthy of You Lord, fully pleasing You, being fruitful in every good work and that I would increase in the knowledge of You. Strengthen me with Your might, according to Your glorious power, fill me with your patience, longsuffering, and joy. Father, I thank You for Your grace and for allowing me to take part in Christ’s inheritance and for my salvation. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

As you pray, if you feel the Lord prompting you to pray about something else, or if you want to personalize a section of the prayer to address something going on in your life, add it to the prayer! Let this passage of Scripture be the jumping-off point of your prayers.

Step 4: READ THE ENTIRE BOOK OF COLOSSIANS + WRITE OUT THE VERSE: At the beginning of every week, read the entire book of Colossians in one sitting. It is only four chapters long and should take you about 10- 15 minutes to read through it entirely. As you read, you’ll learn about the sufficiency and supremacy of Christ along with practical steps you can take in your day to day living that will grow your faith and draw you closer to Jesus. You’ll also notice that as you seek the Lord and ask for more of His knowledge and a greater spiritual understanding (as you pray Colossians 1:9-12 over yourself) that you will better understand the teachings found in the book of Colossians.

One Last Thing…

When you first start praying Colossians 1:9-12, you’re not going to have it instantly memorized. Feel free to look over the verses as you pray. Don’t worry; it’s not like you’re cheating if your eyes are open. If you stay faithful, by the end of these four weeks, you’ll know this Scripture by heart and will be able to include it in future prayers.

I will be praying for you, and please pray for all the other women who will be taking part in this challenge. By the end of these four weeks, I pray that we will all be more intimately in tuned and acquainted with the will and word of God.

I want to leave you with a quote from Corrie Ten Boom about prayer:

“Don’t pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it.”

This is a beautiful plan, thank you
Near the beginning of the article you say something about wanting to know Gods will, with examples like infertility treatment. Please do think about IVF if you come to that, because the laboratory will want to produce multiple embryos for you, more than you will use unless you maybe want 10 children. Pray and think about what happens to the extra ones. How to be sure that if they promise only to set up the number you want, they will indeed only fertilise that many and no more, because they are used to building in these margins, to be efficient. Every little cluster is human, and alive, and that is a sobering responsibility. Please don’t take this as a criticism or condemnation. It is a new realisation to many people
