(Safe to Breathe) Rosemary+Lavender Room Spray

For years, Febreze was my go to “odor eliminating” room spray. The different scents always smelled so yummy, and it did a good job of adding freshness to stale rooms. I never thought twice about spraying this product throughout my home until I took a closer look at the ingredient list and discovered the harmful effects they could have on my body.

When the Environmental Working Group conducted an air pollution test on a popular Febreze room spray they found that when sprayed, it releases up to 89 contaminates. One of these chemicals is linked to cancer, another to neurotoxicity! You can find the detailed report, and the effects each of these 89 contaminates can have on the body here. Unfortunately, every time I or you, sprayed this product we were actually releasing dangerous chemicals all over our homes and subsequently inhaling them!

I bet you’re as surprised as I was when I stumbled across this EWG report. One reason being, is that if you were to look at the ingredients on the back of a bottle of Fabreeze, you would find only a few ingredients listed, none of which sound too scary. What many people don’t know, is that most store bought products do not disclose, nor are required to, all of the ingredients on their labels. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to give up having an easy solution to freshening up your home. I have a simple recipe for a safe to breath room spray that takes less then a minute to make.

Made up of just four natural ingredients: distilled water, rubbing alcohol, rosemary essential oil, and lavender essential oil, this spray will have your home smelling clean and fresh instantly. An added bonus of this spray is that the essential oils are not only therapeutic, but also have natural antibacterial properties (natural germ fighters)! If rosemary+lavender isn’t your favorite scent combination, you can experiment with any mix of essential oils. Two of my favorites are simply eucalyptus or a citrus blend of lemon+orange. Whatever scent combinations you choose, you can rest assured that your house will smell great and that you won’t be inhaling anything that could harm you or your family.
